Module 10: Figure cochlear amplifier

Operation of the cochlear amplifier.

Sound-induced vibration of the stapes sets up vibrations that occur in different regions of the organ of Corti, depending on their frequency. High frequencies are detected at the base, whereas lower frequencies occur at the apex. The blue lines represent the oscillations that occur in response to a soft sound in the absence of amplification, whereas the red lines illustrate how this oscillation is increased and sharpened by the cochlear amplifier.
