A typical example of the time course of neuronal information transfer during synaptic transmission.

The flow of information between an excitatory neuron A and neuron B can be separated into five sequential events that are described in the text. One of the synapses is expanded in the middle of the figure to illustrate the way information is transferred from neuron A to neuron B. The transfer of information takes about 2 ms, during which an action potential (AP) in A excites an AP in B.
