Module 8: Figure sperm connecting piece



Structural organization of the connecting piece of a mammalian spermatozoon.

A prominent feature of this region is the sheath of mitochondria that surrounds the axoneme. Note the extension of the nucleus (labelled as the ‘Redundant nuclear envelope’) that extends down into the connecting piece, and which might be the location of some of the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) receptors found in the sperm (the location of sperm InsP3 receptors is shown in Module 8: Figure location of sperm InsP3 receptors).
