White fat cell metabolism.
The metabolism of white fat cells is poised between lipogenesis and lipolysis that are regulated through separate signalling pathways. The free fatty acid (FFA) used to synthesize triacylglycerol (TAG) is either synthesized from pyruvate or is taken up across the plasma membrane through a fatty acid transport protein 1 (FATP1). During lipolysis, the TAG is hydrolysed by lipases such as adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and hormone-sensitive lipase (HLS) to release glycerol and FFA. See text for further details.
