Control of aldosterone synthesis and secretion by adrenal zona glomerulosa cells.
Adrenal zona glomerulosa cells synthesize aldosterone through a series of steps carried out within the mitochondrion and on the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Angiotensin II and an elevation in plasma K+ levels act through Ca2+ to control the transfer of cholesterol into the mitochondrion through the steroidogenic acute regulator (StAR). The increase in Ca2+ can also enhance synthesis by activating the expression of some of the components of aldosterone biosynthesis.
