Mitochondrial flickers.

Brief openings of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) result in periodic depolarizations of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM ΔV) known as mitochondrial flickers. The onset of each flicker coincides with a superoxide flash and may also result in a temporary reduction in the concentration of Ca2+ within the mitochondrial matrix. These putative mitochondrial calcium blinks have yet to be described. If such blinks exist, they could play an important role in preventing the matrix from being overloaded with Ca2+ that will result in apoptosis.
