Actin dynamics and gene transcription.

The relationship between actin dynamics and gene transcription depends on the transcriptional coactivator myocardin-related transcription factor (MRTF), which is an actin-binding protein. When bound to actin, MRTF is located in the cytoplasm, but when actin is removed by assembly into actin filaments, the free MRTF is released and enters the nucleus where it acts as a coactivator of the serum response factor (SRF) that regulates expression of a large number of proteins that regulate the function of actin. The striated muscle activator of Rho signalling (STARS) contributes to this gene activation by binding to free actin thus contributing to the liberation of MRTF.
