Operation of the ubiquitin–proteasome system of protein degradation.

The ubiquitin–proteasome system functions in the controlled degradation of proteins. Ubiquitin molecules are attached to the protein substrate to form a chain of ubiquitin molecules which is recognized by the proteasome and degraded. The enzymatic steps responsible for the ubiquitination process are described in the text. This figure was based on Figure 1 in Hochstrasser 2003.
